The Importance of Honouring the Liminal Space Between Christmas and New Year

The week between Christmas and New Year is often a blur, hanging in a sort of twilight zone between the ending of one year and the beginning of the next.

For many of us, this is an uneventful period that offers a unique chance to reflect, recharge and realign.

This transitional phase has a quiet magic that sharply contrasts with the hustle and bustle of the previous weeks.

It’s like the world slows down, giving us the rare and precious space we’ve been yearning for all year.

So, it’s worth paying it attention, and having an intention for it.

Honouring this in-between time starts by resisting the urge to fill every moment with activities or obligations, a real challenge for me. How about you?

Instead, we can use this time to reflect on the year that’s passed. Wins. Losses. Lessons. And from these insights, we envision the year ahead. Changes. Dreams. Plans.

Spending time alone in nature, or with a wise friend where you can hold space for each other, is a great way to enjoy this liminal time. Journaling is also a great way to capture your contemplations.

By honouring the liminal space, we acknowledge the power of the pause and the importance of transition. It’s a gift to ourselves, a most significant moment of grace.

As for me, I’ll be turning off social media, spending the mornings writing, my afternoons in nature, my early evenings in the ocean, and the post-dinner evenings reading.

What about you? How will you be spending your liminal period?

To everyone who has supported me by reading and sharing Words that Matter, thank you so very much. It means the world to me. If you have suggestions on what you’d like to read in 2025, please do reach out.

Wishing you and yours a festive holiday, while keeping in our hearts, the many people around the world who are suffering at this time.

See you in 2025.

With love
