Letting go of the scarcity lie

Today’s media airwaves are bombarded with insidious messages designed to make us all hungry and competitive. It’s all about having more – more money, more possessions, more beauty, more assets, more of everything. We’ve been sold the monumental lie that more is better, that there’s simply not enough to go around and that in order for me to have more, you must have less.

We’ve been sold a lifelong lie of scarcity and it’s created a you-or-me world, instead of a you-and-me world. If you don’t believe me, consider this. In 2012, the worlds richest 100 people earned enough money to end world poverty, not once, but 4 times over.

One of the most profound books I’ve ever read on how to change our scarcity culture around money, is The Soul of Money by Lynne Twist. This book changed my life, literally.

‘What became clear was that when people were able to align their money with their deepest, most soulful interests and commitments, their relationship with money became a place where profound and lasting transformation could occur. Their money – no matter what the amount – became the conduit for this change.’

This book helped me to let go of a lifetime of scarcity lessons and lies. It helped me understand that money is a currency that flows in and out of my life and that if I acquire it and use it with good intention, then I’ll always have enough, no matter what curve balls are thrown at me. And finally this book reinforced for me that the discovery of my purpose and the subsequent reinvention of my business was an essential and revolutionary act.

The connection between running a business that operates from a deep purpose and its ability to generate prosperity (for all) is profound. Most marketers simply don’t go this deep. They teach us that it’s enough to look great on the outside and simply sell more crap to more people, all the while contributing to the world’s collective scarcity mindset. They teach us to give our business a lick of paint when it often requires a complete renovation.

The Soul of Money is just one of the books we study as part of the Reinvent your Business program (a slow, mindful and purposeful 12-month program for experienced solo-professionals). The program is being run in Sydney and Melbourne with just 12-20 participants in each, commencing January 2014.

If you’re keen to find out more about the program you can:

  1. Attend the RYB Information Session Webinar
  2. Attend the RYB Melbourne Workshop
  3. Download the RYB brochure and make a time for a chat.

Whether you’re ready to recalibrate your purpose and money mindset and reinvent your business with me or whether you decide to do it on your own, remember to do that one thing different today to get you started on your journey.
