Deep Dinners & A Slow Education

In a world where fast-change and short-term thinking dominates, the Slow Movement advocates a cultural shift towards slowing down life’s pace. It’s an ideology that espouses that fast is not better and that slowing down to a mindful and purposeful pace (not a snails pace) is the path to a wholehearted life and a better world.

There are now slow living, slow food, slow money and slow education movements. And now in Australia, there is The Slow School of Business (Slow School).

The curation of the school is going, dare I say it? Slowly.

Each day I’ve been taking slow mindful steps to curate the school with the people that share my vision (the what) and get my purpose (the why).

That first step has been the signing of an agreement with Hub Australia to host Slow School at Hub Melbourne initially with plans for Sydney and Adelaide in 2015. Thank you to the Hub team; Cam Neil, Imogen Coles and Jan Stewart who deeply understand that communities that work together and learn together, stay together!

The second step has been to host a series of Deep Dinners and Purpose Workshops with business owners. The two Deep Dinners so far have been superb. We’ve shared personal stories while savouring dishes from our childhood and we’ve courageously tabled the real issues we’d most like to resolve in our business (and life).

These issues have included how to deal with anxiety around my business, how to value my services and get paid what I’m worth, how to counteract ageism from clients, how to go about discovering my business purpose, how to transition effectively from selling time to building a scalable business, how to stay focused and not get distracted by BSO’s (bright shiny objects) and how to transition from the corporate world into my own business and so many more.

These will all be topics addressed through collaborative learning classes at Slow School.

To everyone who has shared their insights, wisdom and support for the school so far, I say thank you so very much. A worthy vision is based on a need. Your input is proving that Slow School has the capacity to serve your need and be a part of a new era in education.
