A slow and real education

Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. Benjamin Franklin

This quote says it all when it comes to our learning approach at Slow School.

Last Tuesday night we hosted a thought-provoking dinner on how educators and facilitators can become catalysts for change and on Thursday night every conventional learning norm was challenged with an experiential class exploring the optimal conditions for effective collaboration. Thank you Sandi and Richard for your superb service to Slow School.

This wonderful article on slow education just came to my attention and is real validation that the work we’re doing is so desperately needed in both youth and adult education. Read more

Still, there have been ups and downs in bringing the vision for Slow School to life.

The downs have included the occasional tendency to beat myself up over the fact that we don’t have some of the big stuff in place yet, like umm… the business model. The other is that the class sizes have been smaller than hoped for due to the deep desire not to use conventional mass marketing techniques and to simply allow the school to grow through attraction vs promotion (one of the core principles of conscious marketing).

On the other hand there’s been quite a few ups. We’re attracting lots of attention and interest, including from the Grand-Daddy of Slow, Carl Honoré author of In Praise of Slow, who I’ll be interviewing for Slow School next week.  And perhaps most excitingly, our holding company (Carolyn Tate & Co.) is just a bees-knee away from becoming a certified BCorporation to be announced at a party in Melbourne this week. Yeeha!!!

So really everything at Slow School is perfectly imperfect, which is why we’re asking for your help to keep it that way. Please help us to grow the school and turn learning on it’s head by joining a class (see below) and spreading the love amongst your friends!
