Words that Matter, A New Offering

It’s been a tough week as we all come to terms with the US election results and the potential ripple effect it will have across the world.

Like many of us, I was in complete shock that a convicted felon who is both a misogynist and a climate-change denier could be elected to such an important job at this critical point in history.

As it turned out, it was my 61st birthday the day the results were confirmed.

The day began with an ocean swim at Point Leo on the Mornington Peninsula, the closest beach to our home in Red Hill.

As I was floating about in the clear cold waters, not a human in sight, the grief hit me full force. Tears took over and a sense of helplessness set in as I asked myself the question many of us are pondering right now.

What can I do?

I began to porpoise through the waves seeking answers. After countless dives, I returned to floating knowing that I didn’t have to do anything different to what I already do.

I just have to double-down on my writing and do it better. I have to be braver and bolder with my words. I have to seek out the good stories, the ones that give us hope and inspire us to act. And I have to be more consistent at sharing them.

And so, Words that Matter was born. It’s a weekly offering of stories of hope and positive action in uncertain times.

You’re receiving this because as some point our worlds collided and you opted in to receive my emails. It may have been through Connect Network way back in 2002 or Slow School in 2014 or the Brave Women Writers’ Circle in 2024 or any place in between. Wherever and whenever we met, I hope you’ll accept my invitation to keep connected through my weekly email.

Watch out for Issue 1 of Words that Matter next Friday. If it’s not for you, that’s okay. Feel free to unsubscribe. If it is, and you love it, please reach out. I’m keen to hear how it lands for you.

So, what began as the worst of birthdays, turned into the best of birthdays as I determined that at least I could do something to respond to this unravelling horror story.

The day ended with a scrumptious dinner with my two favourite men, my partner Ric and son Billy, and I began writing again the very next day.

Because stories truly can move us to remake our world!

With love
