Smashing the age barrier

Since turning 50 I’ve become leaner, fitter and healthier than I’ve been in a very long time. I’ve published Unstuck in Provence, launched The Slow School of Business (Slow School) and I’ve just sent off the manuscript for Conscious Marketing to my publisher.

The bar has been raised. And I know unequivocally that age is responsible. I’m achieving things I never could have at 30 or 40. And it’s because of who I’m being not just what I’m doing.

Today I turn 51. (Happy birthday to me!)

For me, it’s just a number. It’s an enabler not a barrier.  However for many, age is a very real barrier. In fact, ageism is rampant. Ageism is stereotyping or discriminating against individuals or groups on the basis of age. Sadly it’s the silent ‘ism’; the one that no one really talks about.

And it doesn’t just affect the old. It affects the young too. Has it affected you?

At Slow School we’re breaking down the age barriers and getting the generations connected. Last week we hosted a fabulous dinner to discuss how to bridge the age gap. The discussion was deep and sadly the time was too short. For a list of our discussion questions Click here.

And we’re not stopping. Next Thursday (13 November) we’re hosting the Is there a TED talk in you? Speaker Graduation Night where our youngest speaker is 17 and the oldest is 63! Won’t you come join us? Click here

So on my 51st birthday, please raise a glass to the young and the old and all those in the in-between and do one just small thing to help smash the age barrier.

Yours against ageism
